Standard alfalfa tests are conducted according to the methods described in Standard Tests to Characterize Alfalfa Cultivars, third edition, 1991, with latest revisions, published by the North American Alfalfa Improvement Conference. Crop Characteristics, Inc. has developed many additional tests for selection or characterization purposes. Data from the tests is used to characterize alfalfa varieties for the Alfalfa Review Board, for Certification, and for PVP & patent purposes. Data is used for marketing purposes as well. Selections are used in a variety of development programs.

Red clover tests are also conducted. Although official standard tests have not been published, Crop Characteristics, Inc. has developed reliable tests, in consultation with experts on the subjects. Data is used for Certification, PVP, patent, and marketing purposes.
